The Progress Association held a successful planning meeting early in 2004 with invited community representatives and local Councillors to help lay the groundwork for an activity program which will keep us busy for the next 3-5 years. The program focuses on the results of the Community and Community Clubs and Groups surveys and a Youth Survey.
Our volunteer base and limited resources have required us to be selective in our choice of projects. Notwithstanding, we have made significant inroads into the areas of;
Town Beautification with links to KESAB Tidy Towns and Road Watch programs, conservation and the environment.
Community Building with the production of a quarterly community newsletter, our own website, a community event calendar, a comprehensive listing of community groups and clubs, the provision of financial and advisory support to local community groups, an ongoing program of community events and festivals, a Community Activity Centre, incorporating a Community Shed with metalwork and woodworking facilities and a Community Resource Office.
Town & Tourism - partnering with over 60 local businesses and actively promoting the town and district.
Heritage & Culture partnering with the National Trust Moonta Branch and the Yorke Peninsula Branch of the Cornish Association of South Australia and actively supporting and promoting our historic and valuable Mining Heritage and Cornish Culture.
Environmental Issues Beginning with a highly successful Plastic Bag Reduction program in partnership with the students of the Moonta Area School, playing a key role in promoting community awareness and the use of the environmentally friendly calico bag. We have facilitated public forums and have been actively involved in community debates on local environmental issues. We have represented the community in discussions with the District Council of the Copper Coast and have played an active role in the policy review process.
We have partnered with Landcare Australia and Australia Post to promote conservation and environmental protection within our District.
Youth Development, offering local youth opportunities to develop their leadership skills and employment prospects, supplemented by grant funding and the support of the Moonta Area School.
We are continuing to develop our links with our Community Partners and other stakeholders including the District Council of the Copper Coast.
