Storage Concerns for Moonta's Pageant Floats

1 January 2012

Three weeks before the Moonta Pageant, the Moonta Progress Association was informed by the District Council that it could no longer use the Old Depot building on Blythe Terrace to store its pageant floats.

The District Council was acting on advice from its Insurer after inspecting the venue and determining that the building presented an unacceptable health and safety risk to volunteers and will be demolished.

Thanks to local business leaders, Gary and Mark, the Progress Association was kindly offered temporary under cover storage in a vacant property close to town while negotiations take place to find a more permanent storage location.

The preferred option is to bring forward plans to extend the existing Activity building at the Community Shed by a further 12mx12m to provide a multi purpose storage facility for floats and other items used in the Progress Association and Community Shed's program of activities.

The Progress Association has received quotes to extend the building and has met with District Council Building and Planning representatives and the CEO to put forward a $ for $ proposal in keeping with the District Council's Community Grants Scheme criteria. Now that the building extension has received the go ahead from Heritage SA, we are hoping to win the support of DCCC Councillors for the proposal.
