18 December 2011
Organisers were left with no other choice but to cancel the event with a little over an hour and half to go with lightning in the area causing real safety concerns for pageant participants and onlookers, heavy rains causing flooding along George Street and at Queen Square and the evacuation of stallholders, an electricity blackout and more bad weather on the way.
Naturally many were disappointed but none more than the children, who were looking forward to participating in and watching the pageant and the arrival of Santa Claus, and the many volunteers who spent numerous hours arranging the event and working on floats and costumes.
Some residents were keen to see the pageant re-scheduled for Sunday or later in the week but, unfortunately, this is not possible because of the lead times required for road closure approvals and public announcements.
The Moonta & District Progress Association thanks its major sponsor Moonta Engineering, our Business Partners, the participating Community Clubs and the people of Moonta and District who willingly support the pageant and volunteer their time to make this community event possible. We also thank the Moonta Uniting Church for offering to make the Uniting Church hall available as
an inside venue for the Carols but with so few people venturing out, it was decided that the Carols should be cancelled also.
The Christmas Pageant Raffle will be drawn on Sunday 18th December at a Progress Association Committee function and winners will be announced on our website and in next week’s YP Country Times along with the winners of the Christmas Lights competition. We thank the District Council of the Copper Coast for donating the prize money for the Christmas Lights competition.
