Moonta on Show for Cornish Festival

22 May 2009

The occasional shower failed to dampen the spirits of the large crowd who gathered in Moonta streets and the Moonta Oval to enjoy Moonta's special day of celebrations for the Kernewek Lowender.

Thousands lined George Street for the maypole dancing and the Grand Procession and many followed on to the Fer Kernewek, the Cornish Fair to join in the festivities. Others opted to take a leisurely stroll though the town to visit the various heritage attractions, art & craft venues and inspect the many interesting shop window displays. Many waited patiently in queues for their cornish pasties at town bakeries and other outlets and the Cornish swanky proved very popular as well.

All Moonta events and activities thoughout the week reported good attendances with the Tourist Train, Wheal Hughes Mine, lolly shop Museum and Moonta School of Mines being particularly popular with tourists.

The perponderance of St Pirans flags along George and Ellen Streets, at Yelta and at venues of heritage significance thoughout the town bought many favourable comments and had a special significance for visitors from Cornwall and the large contingent of Cornish Association visitors from all parts of Australia. We thank the Moonta Businesses who willingly looked after and displayed the St Piran flags thoughout the festival.
